Crispy tofu

Delicious and VEGAN!

Hola loves! Hope you’re well and eating good! Today I’ve brought to you a well requested Crispy tofu recipe that I think you all need to try! It’s vegan, delicious and gluten free and I know tofu has this gross stigma attached to it but I urge you to give this one a try!

Not that I make unhealthy food but you’ll be getting some more plant based recipes from me as I am switching up my diet a little. Don’t be scared, it’ll still be cheap and delicious, trust me on this one.

I actually have a tofu bites recipe already on my blog but you can say this is more of an updated version. I love tofu bites but I find tossing them in the sauce makes them a little soggy and so this is a version to get you crispy crunchy tofu throughout!

Here’s what you’ll need:

Crispy Tofu

  • Half a block of FIRM tofu sliced (wrap in kitchen towels thirty minutes beforehand)
  • 2 tablespoons cornflour (or any flour of choice, I prefer corn)
  • 1 teaspoon chilli powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 12 onion chopped
  • 1 spring onions chopped
  • 2-3 tablespoons vegetable oil (may need more)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Seasoning sauce 

  • 3 tablespoons light soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (you can use fresh)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (I used agave nectar)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Crispy Tofu Method

  1. Mix the dry seasonings into the flour and stir until combined.
  2. Coat the slices of tofu in the flour lightly and set aside. (Mix the seasoning sauce in a bowl beforehand to save time)
  3. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a pan and place on medium to high heat.
  4. Carefully place the tofu in the pan and allow to crispen up on each side for about 1-2 minutes or until golden brown. You may need to add more oil and adjust the heat!
  5. Once all the sides of the tofu are crispy and golden brown, put them on a plate and set aside.
  6. In the same pan (don’t bother cleaning), add a tablespoon of vegetable oil on medium heat and add the onions, season lightly with salt.
  7. Saute lightly until they soften then add the white parts of the spring onions and stir for about 30 seconds to a minute.
  8. When the onions have softened but not too soft, add the seasoning sauce.
  9. You may need to add about 2 tablespoons of water to loosen the sauce, stir well and allow the onions to absorb the sauce, as shown in the video.
  10. Turn off the heat and sprinkle with some black pepper, serve over the crispy tofu and its done!
